The Truth About Lip Fillers: What to Expect Before and After
Lip fillers are one of the most requested aesthetic treatments in the UK, and yet there is still so much misinformation surrounding them. Whether you are considering your first treatment or simply want to understand the process better, this guide cuts through the noise and gives you the honest, expert truth about what lip fillers really involve.
What Are Lip Fillers and How Do They Work?
Lip fillers are injectable treatments made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the body that attracts and retains moisture. When carefully placed into and around the lips, the filler adds volume, defines the lip border, and can improve symmetry. The results are immediate and the treatment typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes from start to finish. At DermaSense, we use only premium, clinically approved dermal fillers, and every treatment is tailored to your facial anatomy and personal goals. The aim is never to create an overdone look, but rather to enhance what you already have with precision and care.
Choosing the Right Technique for Your Lips
Not all lip filler treatments are the same, and the technique used makes an enormous difference to the final result. At DermaSense, we offer several approaches to suit different aesthetics. The Classic technique focuses on natural volume enhancement and is ideal for first-time clients. The Russian Lip technique creates a more lifted, heart-shaped look with a defined Cupid's bow, while remaining flattering and proportionate. Our practitioners will assess your lip shape, facial structure, and the outcome you are hoping to achieve before recommending the most suitable approach. A thorough consultation always takes place before any filler is administered, so you can ask every question you have and feel genuinely confident before proceeding.
What to Expect on the Day of Treatment
Arriving to your appointment, your practitioner will first cleanse the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort throughout. Most of our lip filler products also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, which further minimises any discomfort during injection. You may feel a mild pressure or slight pinching sensation, but the experience is far more comfortable than most clients anticipate. The actual injection process takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Immediately after, you may notice some swelling, which is entirely normal and part of the body's natural response. Your practitioner will review the result with you and provide full aftercare guidance before you leave the clinic.
The Aftercare Period: What is Normal?
The 48 to 72 hours following your lip filler appointment are the most important for your recovery. Swelling is expected and typically peaks around day two before gradually settling. Some clients also experience mild bruising or tenderness around the injection sites, which usually resolves within five to seven days. To support a smooth recovery, avoid strenuous exercise, extreme heat, alcohol, and direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours post-treatment. Do not massage or press on the lips during the first week unless advised to do so by your practitioner. The final result becomes visible at around two weeks, once all swelling has fully subsided. This is also when your complimentary two-week review appointment takes place, so any minor adjustments can be made if needed.
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last and Can They Be Reversed?
Hyaluronic acid lip fillers are not permanent. Results typically last between six and twelve months depending on the individual, the amount of filler used, and your metabolism. Over time, the body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid, and the lips gradually return to their natural state. One of the greatest advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they are reversible. If you are ever unhappy with your result, or if any complication arises, the filler can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. At DermaSense, we offer a dissolving service and take patient safety seriously at every stage of the treatment journey. We believe informed clients make the best decisions, and we are always here to guide you.
